The cornerstone of the Malta Custom House was laid in the Grand Harbour beneath the Lascaris Bastions in 1774. Designed by the architect Joseph Bonnici from Luqa, the building is one of the few government edifices that still serves its original purpose. The Customs House was officially inaugurated by French Grandmaster Fra Emmanuel Marie de Rohan Polduc on 27 July 1776, who funded its completion. A marble slab commemorating this event is affixed on the landing of the main staircase.
