Church of Our Lady of Victories (Senglea Basilica)

The Church of Our Lady of Victories, more commonly known as the Senglea Basilica, is a beacon of faith and resilience in the heart of Senglea (Isla), one of Malta’s historic Three Cities. Constructed in the early 16th century, the church was dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary, but it earned the title of “Victories” following the pivotal role it played during the Great Siege of Malta in 1565. The locals believed that the victory over the Ottoman Empire was granted through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, to whom the church is dedicated.

The Senglea Basilica is renowned for its artistic and architectural splendor, featuring a richly decorated interior with exquisite works of art, including paintings and sculptures that celebrate the Virgin Mary’s life. The most venerated object within the church is the statue of Maria Bambina, believed to possess miraculous powers and fervently honored during the feast of the Nativity of Our Lady every September. This celebration is one of the most vibrant and deeply rooted religious festivals in Malta, attracting both locals and tourists to participate in liturgical services, processions, and a festive atmosphere.
